How Social Media Signals Affects Major Search Engines

Things i told myself in regard to the amount of fans and followers in my various social support systems was that quality mattered, not quantity. It’s the rest I told myself and that i was OK by using it.

Even Brian Moran of Get 10,000 Fans said this, “Fan counts would be the least of my concerns. Fans don’t purchase from you, customers do. ” Yet they have over 300,000 fans on his page and so i wasn’t sure basically believed his rhetoric.

My beliefs were further questioned in a recent virtual conference. I listened and watched intently as Impegno West shredded my quality over quantity argument. (She ripped this to shreds and I’m thankful. ) She asked why spend time with folks with 40 and 50 fans and followers. That stung simply because at one point I had been the start-up with 50 followers. Even today my newest business ventures features a whopping 57 Facebook fans!



Lena continued to say that as much as we may be offended, the number of fans and followers supplement your social proof. Ouch.

This is often disconcerting to the new business owner. How can you get new fans and followers if no one desires to engage with the person who only has a number of fans in the first place? Do you buy fans and followers?

Former U. H. presidential candidates Newt Gingrich and Romney were found to have fake Twitter followers along with new mommy Kim Kardashian.

A couple of years ago, I wanted this social proof and so i did like Newt and Mitt and bought a number of fans and followers. I ended up with lots of folk who weren't the least bit thinking about my service. I deleted them all—they proved that “fans do not buy, customers do. ”

Tag McCray said in a single of his conference calls that, “Being known, bad is what makes you famous. ” When you shoot for excellence and spend time and money to master your craft, you don’t wish to hear those words because you didn’t go into business to stay in cyber obscurity. I hated that his words were showing to become true and asked like every other business owner, how can you get yourself out there?

Exactly what business owner with no social proof along with a meager fan base and following to perform?

Make peace with the undeniable fact that the numbers do matter. There are a number of people who will base their decision on hiring you solely on the Klout score. Ask Sam Fiorella.

Generally there, I said it, the numbers issue.

But why do these numbers issue?


Facts #1: They Increase Visibility

Based on Clara Shieh of AdvertisingAge, “Instead of links and key phrases, it’s ‘likes’ which will get your brand to the top of search engine results. ” And that my fellow business owners is exactly what doing business online is all about—being located online. Again, no one wants to maintain cyber obscurity. Brian went on to say in the presentation that, “Your fan page is really a traffic source. ” It appears that Facebook is positioning itself to become a internet search engine of sorts and the more fans/likes you have, the larger you rank within the results.

Facts #2: Community Credibility

The irony of it. In a community where one can buy followers and fans, the amount of fans add credibility, even if a percentage are fake. Again, go figure! Sharing clever, informative content contributes to your credibility even though no one might actually be reading the content. I read a peice today that described how a post was continually circulated even though link was broken. No one bothered to see it; the subject matter alone made it worthy to talk about contributing to each sender’s credibility.

Facts #3: Social Credibility

The benefit. With that in mind, you may also gain social credibility by connecting with leaders within your industry and engage them in natural conversations. This is exactly what Lena suggested in the conference I attended. Not go into your best sales pitch once you connect! You’ll be blocked and banned immediately! Plug in to conversations where they may be natural and engage them. Twitter chats are a way to meet and interact with like-minded people and earn credibility. In addition to you earn social proof, however, you also meet great people. People, who may ultimately relate your company to a colleague, write the foreword for your next book or be a featured guest blogger on the site.

So…the numbers matter.

There is no making your way around that truth.


It can help online seekers find you as well as your business.


How long does it take? Well one conference speaker said it took annually to develop to 14,000 plus listeners of her podcast display. Brian can pull that number within a month so it depends on the network and technique applied.

Leave cyber obscurity! Earn your social proof and improve your fans and followers. The world needs the skills you have been honing and the craft you’ve been perfecting.
